The Moments Before Anyone Says “Smile”

There is a version of a wedding day that gets performed — the aisle walk with the chin lifted just right, the first look angled for the camera before it’s angled for each other, the toast delivered to the room instead of to the person it’s actually about. I can shoot that day. Anyone can shoot that day.

It’s not the day I’m interested in.

I’m interested in what happens in the ninety seconds before your mother sees you in the dress for the first time and forgets to arrange her face. I’m interested in the shake in your hands, tying his tie, the one that has nothing to do with nerves and everything to do with the fact that you are about to promise your whole life to someone in front of everyone you’ve ever loved.

I’m interested in the moment right after the ceremony, when it’s actually done, and the two of you look at each other like — oh. It’s real now. That’s not a pose. Nobody can perform that. And it’s the only part of the day that’s actually true.

Weddings ask a lot of people. They ask you to be beautiful and composed and gracious to your third cousin twice removed while also, somewhere underneath all of it, having the most unguarded day of your life. Most photography chases the first thing and misses the second entirely. I go looking for the second thing on purpose.

That means I’m not chasing you around asking you to walk again, laugh again, kiss again until it looks right. I’m watching for the moment it already is right — the real one, the one that happened once and will never happen exactly that way again. The flower girl who refuses to walk and has to be carried down the aisle mid-tantrum. The best man who can’t get through the toast without stopping. The way you grab your dad’s hand for one extra second before he lets you go.

Those aren’t the mistakes in the timeline. Those are the wedding.

I think there’s something almost sacred in how much a body reveals when it stops performing — the real laugh instead of the camera-ready one, the tears that ruin the makeup a little, the hands that won’t stay still. I don’t try to smooth that out. I photograph it exactly as it happens, because that’s the version of your wedding day you’ll actually want to remember in twenty years — not the choreographed one, the true one. The one where you can look at a photo and feel your whole chest again, because you can tell, even just looking at it, that nobody told you how to stand.

So, if you’re looking for a photographer who will pose every corner of your day into something flawless and a little bit hollow, that’s not what I do. But if you want someone in the room who’s watching for the real thing — the unscripted, unglamorous, completely alive parts of the day that actually happened to you — that’s what I’m there for.

Show up as you actually are. I’ll take it from there.
