Sacred Hysteria: Primal Medicine for Motherhood and the Crone

I didn’t learn sacred hysteria from a book. I lived it.

Motherhood cracked me open before I had language for what was happening. Nobody tells you that the body doesn’t just make a person. It rearranges you. It takes the performance you were doing before and burns it down. There is no performing at 3am with a baby who won’t stop crying and a body that hasn’t slept in years. You either meet yourself completely raw, or you break trying not to.

That’s the first piece of primal medicine: motherhood as initiation, not milestone.

What Sacred Hysteria Actually Feels Like

Nobody warns you that somewhere in the exhaustion, something ancient wakes up. A rage that isn’t about the dishes. A grief that isn’t about any one thing. A wanting that has nothing to do with being a good wife or a good mother, and everything to do with being a whole woman again.

For centuries, that feeling had a clinical name: hysteria. A word used to shame women into silence. But I’ve come to call it something else. I call it the body telling the truth after years of being told to be quiet.

I didn’t read about sacred hysteria in a workshop. I felt it happen in my own kitchen, my own bed, my own body. It arrived the moment I stopped swallowing what I felt and let it move instead. That’s not theory. That’s survival, grown loud enough to become medicine.

Motherhood as the First Threshold

Motherhood asks everything of a woman, often all at once. It asks for patience she doesn’t have yet. It asks for a body that isn’t fully hers anymore. And underneath all of it, it asks her to keep functioning while something enormous is happening inside her.

Most women aren’t taught to expect this. So when the rage or the grief or the hunger for a return to self finally surfaces, it can feel like something is wrong with them. It isn’t. It’s the beginning of sacred hysteria doing exactly what it’s meant to do: waking a woman back up to herself.

The Crone Is Not the End

Now the crone years are approaching. Not the version we were taught to fear, dried up and disposable and done. The real one.

The crone has already burned through the performing. She has already survived the breaking. She has already stopped asking permission to feel what she feels. The crone isn’t the end of a woman’s power. She is the version of her with nothing left to prove and nothing left to hide.

Maiden gives a woman innocence. Mother gives her the fire. Crone gives her the truth, unfiltered, because she has finally run out of reasons to soften it for anyone else’s comfort. Sacred hysteria is the thread that runs through all three, if a woman lets it.

Primal Medicine Is Something You Live, Not Something You Buy

This is what I mean when I talk about primal medicine. It isn’t a product. It isn’t a concept you study from a distance. It’s something you bleed into.

It shows up in the actual rooms of your actual life: the birth, the breakdown, the 3am rage, the moment you finally stop apologizing for taking up space. Sacred hysteria was never an abstract idea to me. It’s simply the name I finally gave to what had already been living inside me, waiting for me to stop calling it crazy and start calling it mine.

I’m not teaching you something you’ve never felt before. I’m handing you back something you already survived.
